A PROJECT BY SUPERKÜL
Compass House is a place designed to highlight the experience with its surroundings and not only the domestic programming. By atelier superkül, Compass House won 2017’s Architizer A+ Award, on the Residential Private House category.
This house, made for the weekends of a family of six in Niagara Escarpment, has two perpendicular wings that enclose an outdoor courtyard with an almost totemic fireplace. The elongated form of the house allows a nice distribution of the various rooms, with the kitchen and living/dining areas at the centre, and the bedrooms on either end. Besides, all spaces have natural light and ventilation.
One the studio’s aims was for the exterior to reflect an architecture that endured, so low maintenance materials were used. A sustainable house was intended, which would withstand several generations.
