Brutality and elegance are the words chosen by KAAN Architecten to better define its new home. In the heart of Rotterdam, along the river Maas and a few meters from the symbolic Erasmus bridge and and the office’s award-winning Education Center at Erasmus Medical Center University, the project transformed 1,400 m² of old De Nederlandsche Bank facilities into the new headquarters of the KAAN, which covers more than 80 work areas. The brick façade on Boompjes Street stands out against the river skyline and is characterized by an entrance hall enriched by the mosaic of Dutch artist Louis van Roode, who decorated several public spaces in Rotterdam during the post-war period. According to Dikkie Scipio, one of the architects who heads KAAN, "the notion of sharing of knowledge is at the core of the division of spaces and the interior design of the new office. This rough space has the special gift of an industrial yet monumental aesthetic, a beauty that we decided to exalt through a solid balance between two simple materials wood and concrete”.
An extensive work area dedicated to the architects is contemplated by the intense light of day on both sides and offers a unique view of the surrounding waters. The rectangular plan connects work, meeting areas and leisure spaces through several monumental corridors and passages.
