Mistake on the Best Picture

The Oscars’ 89ª edition, presented by Jimmy Kimmel, was marked by an unusual moment during the most anticipated announcement of the night: the Best Picture winner. Warren Beatty and Fave Dunaway declared La La Land the winner but, when the team was in the middle of the speech, it was revealed that the true winner of the most prestigious category was Moonlight.
Moonlight’s victory was considered important given the social issues addressed in the film and the political moment United States of America are going through. Nonetheless, La La Land was the great winner of the night, taking home six Oscars, including Best Actress in Leading Role, to Emma Stone, and Best Directing, to Damien Chazelle.
But the mistake on the Best Picture announcement was not the only gaffe of the night. During the In Memoria, the moment of the night when those who passed away are remembered, Jannet Patterson, an Aussie costume designer, was honoured. But, instead of her picture on that posthumous tribute, the one displayed was one of Patterson’s friend Jan Chapman, a Hollywood producer, still alive.
Even though, it was a happy night to the winners, among them Viola Davis, as Best Actress in a Supporting Role, and Mahershala Ali, as Best Actor in a Supporting Role. Zootopia won Best Animated Feature Film, O.J.: Made in America won Best Documentary, and The Salesman won Best Foreign Language Film.
