THE NATION’S CHAIR
Considered the most characteristically Portuguese chair, the chair by Gonçalo Rodrigues dos Santos, created in the 1950s, has since served as a seat for tired legs relaxing on the country’s terraces.
With the aim of recreating these national roots, designer Alexandre Caldas from AROUNDtheTREE – a “proudly Portuguese” brand, the team of which values national traditions and design, blessing them with a new configuration – has developed the Portuguese Roots chair, no longer in painted metal, but in wood and cork. The new Portuguese chair figures in the permanent exhibition of MUDE (Portuguese National Museum of Design) and was given the 2014 Silver Award by the A’Design Award & Competition.
