IN PRAISE OF WINE
The adjective that qualifies the noun "chapel" may seem strange, but in fact this small church of an old private house does not have the traditional purposes of a religious worship place. Here the act of celebration is another – wine tasting in a place, no longer consecrated to God, but to Wine.
When Francisca Lobão, an interior designer, started looking for a place for a design studio, she found this small building located in a winding street between Jardim do Carregal and Rua de Cedofeita, in Porto. Later, delighted by the chapel inside that building, Francisca investigated the history of the house and discovered that it had been built in the 19th century by the first Viscount of Vilarinho de São Romão. António Teixeira de Girão, besides viscount, was also an expert in agriculture and viniculture. As Francisca worked on a joint project with the Vinho Verde Route, she thought that such a remarkable coincidence could only mean that she should dedicate the place, not to design, but to wine.
